New Senior Appointments at Bunker Hill Community College
Bunker Hill Community has made three new Senior Appointments at the College, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced this week.
Dr. James F. Canniff has been appointed Vice President of Academic Affairs & Student Services. Canniff holds a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, an M.A. in Urban Studies from Howard University and a B. A. from Catholic University. Prior to his arrival at BHCC, Canniff was the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Suffolk County Community College in Seldon, NY. During his 25-year career at Suffolk County Community College, he also served as the Vice President for Academic and Campus Affairs and Dean of Instruction/Chief Academic Officer for the College’s Brentwood campus.
Paul Wolff III has been appointed Bunker Hill Community College’s first Director of Sustainability. Wolff holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Towson University and an M.A. in Architecture from Harvard University. Prior to joining Bunker Hill Community College, he was the Director of Sustainability and Energy Management at Mount Wachusett Community College, also in Massachusetts. His prior positions include: Sustainable Design Research Architect for Sasaki Associates and the Green Building Technical School Outreach Program Manager for the Conservation Services Group. He is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional and has received training as a Certified Energy Manager.
Thomas L. Saltonstall has been appointed BHCC’s Acting Director of Diversity and Inclusion. Mr. Saltonstall has an M.P.A. from Harvard University and a B.A. from Harvard College. He has been involved in workplace diversity and affirmative action work for more than 30 years. Saltonstall served as the Director of the Boston area office of the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission. He has extensive experience in conflict resolution including serving as staff mediator and trainer at the American Arbitration Association. He has received many awards for his work in affirmative action and his commitment to civil rights, including: an award for “Civil Rights Leadership” from the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination; an award from the Greater Boston Civil Rights Coalition for “leadership and commitment to civil rights” and an award from the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations for “contributions to intercultural and race relations in Massachusetts.” He currently serves on the Governor’s Advisory Board to the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination.

Bunker Hill Community College Receives Major Grant to Help Low-Income Students
BHCC Again Named "Best Community College" by Boston Spanish weekly El Planeta
For the second year in a row, El Planeta, the largest circulating weekly Spanish language newspaper in Massachusetts, has named Bunker Hill Community College “Best Community College” in its annual “Best Of” survey.
More than 11,000 readers participated in the voting, the only “Best Of” poll for the Latino population in Massachusetts. The recognition published in El Planeta, which has a circulation of 50,000, praised BHCC for its multicultural and diverse student population. The award also stated: “The emphasis of this education institution is to help students achieve their academic goals by using creative ways to adapt to the pace of the student life, such as the midnight classes.”

BHCC Receives Somerville Housing Authority Grant
Bunker Hill Community College received a $23,000 grant from the Somerville Housing Authority to support an innovative educational model targeting residents of Somerville’s Mystic housing project who are currently attending BHCC. The project, funded by the Somerville Housing Authority, and known as SomerPromise will begin in the Fall 2010 semester.

Grand Gold Award to BHCC for Midnight Courses Media Campaign in International Competition
Boston, July 23, 2010. At the annual conference of CASE, held in New York City from July 18-20, Bunker Hill Community College received a top award, Grand Gold, for its Midnight Courses media campaign. Headquartered in Washington D.C., with offices in London and Singapore, CASE is the major organization for education professionals in communications, marketing, fundraising and alumni relations. In this international competition, BHCC was the only community college to win a top award this year. The College was competing against all levels of institutions of higher education, including major 4-year public and private colleges and universities. Only 17 out of a total of 2,700 entries garnered a Grand Gold award this year. Other 2010 Grand Gold winners include: The University of Cambridge (UK), Barnard College, University of California, Berkeley, York University (Canada), and Tulane University.
BHCC President Dr. Mary L. Fifield, and Dr. Colleen Roach, Executive Director of Communications and Marketing, showcased the College’s winning media strategy by making a presentation at the Conference.
In selecting BHCC for a Grand Gold award, CASE recognized the wide-ranging media coverage of the Midnight Courses. Front page media coverage included: The New York Times, the Boston Globe, and the Boston Business Journal. The AP wire service also covered the story, which then was picked up by major media across the country, including the Washington Post, the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Baltimore Sun, Washington Times, the Sacramento Bee and the San Diego Union Tribune. International coverage included: The International Herald Tribune and articles in Dubai and Vietnam.
Broadcast media coverage included Fox National, Boston’s ABC affiliate, New England Cable News, CNN, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. NPR and other public radio stations also covered the story.

BHCC to Continue College Course Offerings at Malden High School
Boston, June 14, 2010 -- Bunker Hill Community College and Malden High School will sign a memorandum of agreement at the College on June 15, 2010, to continue offering college courses at Malden High School. Under a pilot program last year, 532 students enrolled in BHCC credit courses during the evening at Malden High School. There were 68 Malden High School students who completed courses at the satellite and the Charlestown campus, earning both high school points for graduation and college credits. BHCC Nursing Professor Honored in Boston Globe's Salute to Nurses
Professor Howard Weiner, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., was nominated by one of his students for the Boston Globe’s 8th Annual Salute to Nurses, published on May 2, 2010. “Professor Weiner champions the needs of the psychologically infirm,” wrote BHCC nursing student Scott Schocker. “Professor Weiner has inspired me to seek whatever resources are available in order to treat our patients with professionalism, compassion, empathy and dignity.” (05/25/2010) FULL STORY
Bunker Hill Community College Wins Green Building Grant
Bunker Hill Community College has won a $2,000 technical assistance grant from Second Nature, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced this week. The grant, one of 15 awarded nationally, focuses on helping under-resourced colleges and universities accelerate progress toward sustainability. It will provide the College with new ideas to reduce energy consumption and waste, maximize recycling and improve operations.
Paul Righi, manager of Buildings and Grounds, was selected by the College to receive training offered under the grant. He will participate in workshops, webinars and online courses about operating sustainable campuses. Righi plays a key role in the College’s green building operation and maintenance. “We are confident that the schools receiving these grants will quickly turn their training into results that will benefit their entire campus community,” said Ashka Naik, manager of Second Nature’s Advancing Green Building in Higher Education program. “We awarded grants based on an assessment of the institution’s level of need, statement of interest and campus sustainability capacity.”
Bunker Hill Community College President Fifield is a charter signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Member institutions are committed to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and supporting efforts in the United States to achieve energy independence. On March 23rd, the College dedicated its new Health & Wellness Center, which is expected to receive LEED Gold certification.
Second Nature was founded in Boston in 1993 by Senator John F. Kerry, Teresa Heinz Kerry and others to work for a just and sustainable future. Since then, Second Nature has helped expand the concept of education for sustainability into a major national movement.

Bunker Hill Community College Receives Award for Promoting Higher Education for Low-Income Youth in Chelsea
Boston, April 23, 2010. Bunker Hill Community College was honored at a special dinner for its leadership role in promoting educational opportunities for at-risk youth. The non-profit organization “Bostonians for Youth” presented the College with the award on April 15, 2010. The award honored BHCC for its role in the “Chelsea Compact,” a recently-announced collaboration to promote higher education for low-income youth in Chelsea. BHCC, FUEL (Families United in Educational Leadership), and the University of Massachusetts Amherst are working together on this initiative, launched on March 23, 2010. The collaborative agreement targets high school seniors in Chelsea who participate in the FUEL College Savings Program.
According to the terms of the compact, BHCC will provide up to five scholarships per year that will cover the cost of in-state tuition and fees up to 12 credit hours per semester. These awards, named the President’s Chelsea Scholarship, will also provide faculty mentorship to students during the scholarship award period. The College will also collaborate with UMass Amherst to highlight the financial transfer benefits for students interested in pursuing a four-year degree upon graduation from Bunker Hill Community College.
Accepting the “Bostonians for Youth” award on behalf of the College, was BHCC Board Chair Jeanne-Marie Boylan. In her remarks, Boylan stressed the College’s commitment to “access and affordability” in higher education, and its long-standing history of involvement with the Chelsea community.
