Acclaimed Actress and Humanitarian America Ferrera Speaks on February 16, 2012
America Ferrera, the award-winning actress who is best known for her portrayal of Betty Suarez in the hit comedy Ugly Betty, will speak at Bunker Hill Community College on Thursday, February 16, 2012. Ferrera’s role in this TV show landed her some of the highest accolades in the entertainment industry: an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as ALMA and Imagen awards.
Her starring role in Real Women Have Curves resulted in numerous other honors, including a Sundance Jury Award for best actress. Ferrera both starred in and was executive producer of The Dry Land, the story of a soldier returning home to Texas after the war in Iraq, which won the award for Best International Film at the 2010 Edinburgh Film Festival.
Ferrera is also widely known for her humanitarian work. She has devoted her time to a range of humanitarian organizations, including Save The Children, which promotes education for children in need. For her commitment to educating youth in Mali, she received the 2011 Global Action Award for Childhood Development and Education.
Ms. Ferrera will speak about how education has helped her achieve success, and the importance of “giving back” to the global community to help those who are less fortunate.
BHCC’s “Compelling Conversations” speaker series has brought renowned authors, artists and activists to its campus. Past speakers have included New York Times writer Gail Collins, civil rights activist Rubin “Hurricane” Carter and award-winning filmmaker and author Michael Moore.

Bunker Hill Community College Students Win McGraw Hill Video Award
Four students at Bunker Hill Community College shared a national award in the LearnSmart and Win! student video competition, sponsored by McGraw-Hill Education. The four students, who worked together as a group, are: Guzel Bikyanova, Michael Brendel, Jennah Epstein-Kraus, and Kaina Janvier.
Designed to showcase how digital technology improves and personalizes learning, the national contest challenged students to develop original videos providing details on how they have used adaptive learning technologies in the learning experience.
The students from Bunker Hill Community College won the third-place award, and will share a scholarship of $1,000. Their winning entry was selected from more than 100 submitted videos. and will be featured on several McGraw-Hill websites and social media channels. The panel of judges consisted of professors, business leaders and members of the media covering key issues in technology and education.
BHCC students began using the LearnSmart Technology in the classes of Professor William Hoover, who teaches anatomy and physiology. Hoover describes the LearnSmart technology as a gaming system that requires students to go down the proper pedagogical path in the learning process. He also states that the College is "ahead of the curve" in using LearnSmart's artificial intelligence system: "For two years, BHCC has been using this artificial intelligence in classrooms, whereas four-year colleges are just starting to introduce it," Hoover said.
The students were assisted in the project by staff from BHCC's Teaching, Learning, and Instructional Technology Center: Don Tracia, Coordinator of the Center, who served as the lead videographer and Mandy Chan, who was the lead editor of the project.

Bunker Hill Community College Launches New Assisted Living Management Program
BHCC’s Division of Professional Studies now offers a program designed to meet the needs of the growing field of Assisted Living. The program is an option titled “Management of Assisted Living and Institutional Facilities,” within the Associate in Science Degree: Hotel Restaurant Program. BHCC’s Office of Community Education has partnered with the Pacific Northwest Tax School (PNWTS) to offer an online class titled "The Basic Tax Course." BHCC Graduate Selected for National Mentorship Program by U.S. Green Building Council Brian Alves, a graduate of Bunker Hill Community College, was selected to participate in the Classroom to Boardroom Diversity Mentorship Program designed by the U.S. Green Building Council (U.S.G.B.C). Alves graduated from BHCC in June 2011, with an Associate in Arts degree in Business Administration. During his time at BHCC, he was very active in college sustainability activities and co-founded the campus Sustainability Club. Alves is now enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he is studying business and finance. Fifield announced today. BHCC is the only community college in Massachusetts to make the "Top 40" List of Associate Institutions. The College's current international enrollment is 784, an increase of 30 students over the figure of 754 cited in the Chronicle's list. O’Brien, who visited BHCC last year, is the author of eight books, most notably, The Things They Carried, listed by the New York Times as among the 20 best books of the last 25 years. O’Brien is known for his compelling portrayals of the Vietnam War and its impact on American servicemen and women engaged in that conflict. The course will address the new Internal Revenue Service testing requirements for tax preparers. The exam is expected to affect 300,000 to 500,000 existing tax preparers nationwide who must pass the new IRS exam by the end of 2013 or be forced to leave the industry. The IRS test is scheduled to be rolled out this spring.
The partnership between BHCC and PNWTS will provide students with immediate access to online tax education courses and the opportunity to earn a certificate of completion. (12/09/2011) FULL STORY
